Student Led Teaching Fellowships 2015/16

We're delighted to present the outcomes of yet another productive year of partnership between Cardiff Met SU and LTDU.  This is the fifth annual award for Teaching Fellows - who've been recognised by their students for the quality of their teaching and their commitment to the student experience.

The student comments demonstrate not only the high standards of teaching, but also the numerous ways in which staff help to prepare students for their future.

The partnership forged between LTDU learning developers and the Students' Union allows the students' insights to inform our continuous improvement by providing examples of those practices that have really made a difference. These insights also demonstrate the innovative and creative teaching practices that exist in Cardiff Met.

A PDF booklet describing the Student-Led Teaching Fellowships 2015-16 is available.  Please click here for the English version.  (Welsh version to follow shortly.)

What the students say:

Kath has delivered very insightful and contextual lectures throughout all three years of study. She provides detailed examples and links theory with practice at every opportunity. She has also been extremely supportive and helpful as my dissertation tutor.

She has a high level of engagement during lectures and seminars. The support she provides is exceptional and Kath interacts with students very well. Her teaching techniques are fun, positive and engaging. She has a strong ability to motivate students to working at a high level and continues to provide critical but appropriate feedback.

What the students say:

Sally’s lessons are always engaging (e.g. marshmallow challenge, quizzes etc). She's teaching us IPD and always brings attention to how she designs the lesson for us, the thinking behind it and how it relates to our school placements. She's always encouraging and uses humour when we're not at our best to cheer us up. She's always challenging us to do the best we can.

Sally has been incredibly supportive right the way through my PGCE. Her feedback is positive and always constructive, giving me examples of things that I've done well and directions for how I can improve in other areas. Her lessons are engaging and I've used many of ideas within my own practice. In adapting one of her ideas for peer assessment, I integrated it into one of my own lessons during my second teaching placement and was awarded a Grade 1, the highest you can achieve for a lesson.

Continuously goes out of her way to help, support and advise students to gain the highest standards. Her subject knowledge and experience is fantastic. Sally is engaging, motivating and inspiring every Monday morning!

What the students say:

Leanne is an amazing tutor and has helped improve my academic skills a lot. Her feedback improved my work not only in a module but across the entire course. She gave me a lot of confidence in pursuing my aims regarding my future choices such as postgraduate opportunities. She has also enabled us to think differently by providing a lot of critical lectures and making us look at any piece of information critically and from outside of the box.

Leanne is consistently encouraging students to come and discuss issues and through several meetings I have been able to expand my knowledge from lectures. From Leanne I was quickly able to understand research protocol and layout, encouraged to explore existing research and make links across themes and how to evidence such findings. I understand the mark scheme well and know what is expected in order to achieve the 1st level that I seek to attain.

Leanne has implemented the 'Psychological Literacy Award' which will provide students with an opportunity to better themselves and open more doors into the working world.

What the students say:

This year, my third and final year of university, Richard is my tutor for Product Design, and sets up meetings that allow open discussion in a safe and secure environment. No idea is stupid or too much and it makes it much easier to create a well-executed finished piece. Along with providing a genuine interest in my current work and everyone else’s in the tutorial group he also provides us with options for our future careers and be ahead of the game. He’s been able to provide lists of contacts who are useful to various projects and things to research, along with helping manage time.

Richard went the extra mile to help students on the 'Are You Sitting Comfortably?' field option. He really pushed us all to do well by setting up an engaging module that was tough, but so rewarding! I could tell that he genuinely cared about us all succeeding.

He gives very constructive feedback which is supported by fair precise arguments. Also he is very easy to approach if you have a problem. His encouragement and motivating personality makes you want to work harder. This is because you can feel he is very dedicated to his work and wants the best for his students.

What the students say:

She is extremely good at filling my year group with confidence. She has so much experience in her field and is constantly sharing her knowledge and experiences with us. She is an asset to the dance course and I say we fully appreciate everything she does. She constantly challenges my thinking and enables me to be passionate about learning.

Sally is an inspiration to us as students. She keeps us motivated and provides a perspective. She gives each student the support they may need, whether it’s personal or academic and always has her door open. She allows us and encourages us to be confident in everything we do. She's awesome!

Sally inspires us all through the choreography process and gives us confidence in what we do as well as seeing our potential to improve even more in future training. She is motivated and fully understands us all as dancers to push and help improve us in the industry. Sally is a motivating lecturer who gives me really good feedback and listens and supports us.
