Sorrell Saturday club

The Sorrell Saturday Art and Design Club at Cardiff Metropolitan University has been running for two years and has been incredibly successful on a number of different levels. Working in collaboration with the School of Education and Social Policy, Cardiff School of Art and Design and First Campus. The workshops run on a Saturday morning, offering free Art and Design classes in a range of subjects to young adults age 15-16 across a 30 week program. The 30 weeks is structured to give the participants an experience of the subjects available within the degree programmes in Cardiff Metropolitan University's school of Art and Design.

The course has been developed by lead tutor Kelly Campbell and is supported by a team of current PGCE Art and Design students, this has enabled the Club participants to experience art practice delivered by experts in their field who are learning to become teachers of the future. Not only have the Club participants benefited from their practice and various external trips, the PGCE students have also benefited greatly making connections within the school of Art and Design and contacts from collaborating with external artists. The work that the students have developed is outstanding and to see the young people grow in confidence and ability is a credit to both academic schools and all the students involved. Examples of the work created by the Club participants can be found on the First Campus Twitter page below.
