Specialist Subject Areas

Teaching in Higher Education since 1992 specialising in studio practice and technical aspects of developing creativity in Ceramics. Teaching experience also include teaching and examining in a wider material design.

Biography

Since graduating from the Masters Programme in Ceramics at Cardiff School of Art & Design, I have worked consistently as both an educator at Higher Education level as well as a practitioning ceramic artist, having now established my home and studio for some fifteen years in rural Carmarthenshire.

Through my work I strive to create artefacts that are rooted in the history and traditions of the ceramic vessel and yet present the view with objects which are simultaneously familiar and mysterious, strong and fragile, passive and dynamic. By embedding such oppositional values, I aspire to make works of an experimental nature.

Qualifications

1993 MA Ceramics
1987-1990 BA Three Dimensional Design, Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Glass
1995 Certificate in Further & Higher Education.

Current research

  • Producing collaborative works with felt maker Heather Belcher for touring exhibition as part of the ‘Pairings’ group.
  • Exploring potentials of funding from Welcome Foundation on collaborative project with sister Professor Kathryn Ayscough
  • Investigating and developing technical aspects of creative practice specifically use of levigated slips and surface combustion techniques utilising processes exploited by Greek and Roman cultures. Through this investigation establish strong synergies between museum collections and archaeologists with a heightened practical understanding
  • Contributing to advanced electronic learning projects developed within Ceramics Department
