Biography

I am perhaps best known for the children’s non-fiction books that I have written and designed. They have been nominated for numerous awards and achieved international critical and commercial success (published in more than 15 languages and selling in excess of two million copies) These factors have firmly established Jay Young Books Ltd as a company with a reputation for creating original, innovative quality books and as such I have been approached by numerous publishers to work for them in a consultancy capacity on their own titles as well as developing my own concepts. One of my publishers describes me as follows:

“Jay Young is an expert in science and invention and the author of The Most Amazing Pop-Up Science Book (Watts) and The Art of Science (Walker) amongst others. He is the winner of many awards including the Rhone Poulenc Science Book Award and the British Book Award for Best Illustrated Book. He has created more than twenty books, in sixteen different languages which have sold in excess of 1 million copies world wide. Jay lives in Cardiff ” (courtesy of Chrysalis Books)

Alongside my book work I have gained much experience working in the wider design and publishing industry, over the years. This combination has equipped me with a diverse range of skills and abilities that I believe are highly relevant for teaching graphic design at foundation level. I have been fortunate to have worked for a variety of large international and smaller design and publishing companies as a staff member, freelancer and consultant both in the uk and abroad, as well as running my own practice. As a result I am used to working as part of a team as well as independently. I have worked for a diverse range of clients which include:

Boots / The Watts Publishing Group / Dorling kindersley / Harper Collins / Tiger Television / The Gourmet Pizza Company / Basildon Bond / Sellotape / The National Rivers Authority / Swansea City Football Club / Forestry Commission for Wales

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of these companies I have gained experience of a wide range of graphic disciplines including:

Packaging / Retail / Point of Sale / Publishing / Corporate Identity / Brand Identity / Advertising / Illustration.

Whilst working for these clients my responsibilities have included:

Preparing budgets and fee proposals / Commissioning photographers, illustrators and other designers / Presentations / Co-ordinating projects from conception through to production.

I feel that the success of my books is in part due to the fact that I am able to handle all aspects of the design process from concept through to to editorial and production. Recent ventures include a collaboration with Swansea Football Club and most recently a collaboration with the Forestry Commission for Wales on two unusual book packaging projects. Both ventures mark a new stage in the company’s development; undertaking both the design and manufacture of products.
