Florence is a final year Graphic Communication student at Cardiff Met. In March 2015 she took part in Concept, a 4 day event in which students from Cardiff Met, Cardiff University and University of South Wales worked in groups to design an advertising campaign for Santander. She had the following to say about Concept:
I decided to apply for Concept as I want to work in marketing after I graduate and I felt it was a good mix of what I am currently studying and what I would like to do in the future. I was also keen to pick up some tips on pitching and presentation skills.
Before I started Concept I didn't really know what to expect but I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more about marketing to see if that's what I really want to do. At the end of the event I felt that I had achieved something and felt inspired to take part in similar activities again. I also found the event a lot less formal than I had imagined – it was a very relaxed atmosphere where we were free to chat with the other students as well as the leaders of the event.
One of the main things that I gained from Concept was meeting new people from different backgrounds. It was beneficial because we were all working towards the same goal and since nobody knew each other beforehand, it forced us to come out of our shells and took us out of our comfort zones.
The most challenging part of Concept was trying to agree on one idea as a group. We were all from various courses so we all approached the problem in different ways. The group got along well from the start, but at times decisions had to be made and we staggered a bit before measuring the pros and cons of various ideas. At the start I found it difficult to express my opinions fully if I felt one idea was stronger than another for example but by the end of the programme I feel I was able to confidently express myself.
During Concept I learned a lot of new skills and I also learned that when I'm thrown in at the deep end I try my hardest to get out rather than panic. I consider myself quite a shy person but at Concept I didn't have much choice but to speak to people that I didn't know and I surprised myself by how easy this was. I think it helped because we were all in the same boat and nobody knew each other so there was mutual effort on both sides.
Concept really helped me to gain a broader understanding of marketing and confirmed for me that this is the path I want to take. I am currently applying to a selection of universities to study a Masters in Marketing and the knowledge I gained at Concept will be really beneficial. Once I have completed this I am looking to work in a client relations role for an advertising agency.
