Higher Apprenticeships

Higher Apprenticeships provide employees with a combination of on the job training whilst studying a higher-level qualification giving them the knowledge required within the workplace. Higher Apprenticeships are available levels 4 and 5. Apprentices learn at work so are able to develop the knowledge and occupational competencies that are demanded by specific job roles and sectors.

Cardiff School of Management is co-delivering with work based learning providers on a number of Higher Apprenticeship frameworks to be able to provide the relevant qualification and the academic teaching skills and knowledge that are required at this level of learning. Higher apprenticeships include: 

There are also opportunities to be able to provide progression opportunities for Higher Apprentices with some programmes offering fast track or recognition of prior learning opportunities onto degree and masters level qualifications.


Degree Apprenticeships combines the work based element of an apprenticeship with the academic framework of a Higher Education qualification, where the apprentice is employed providing practical experience. 

Cardiff Metropolitan University offers Degree Apprentices in Wales funded by HEFCW and is currently validating the BSc Applied Data Science with the School of Technologies.

The BSc in Data Science recognises the Higher Apprenticeship in Data analytics level 4 as a progression pathway to level 5 and 6 of the programme. This pathway is currently delivered by ALS:  https://www.alstraining.org.uk/apprenticeship-employers/data-analytics/ 

Note to employers: Degree Apprenticeships can be used to upskill existing employees where the opportunity for work based learning and assessment is provided. 

Future Degree apprentices under development are: 
  • Software Engineering
  • Cyber Security
