Preparing to Teach in PcET

​​​If you are not sure that the two-year PGCE/PCE PCET course is right for you this short course is designed as an introduction to teaching in post 16. 

This 10-week preparing to teach course has been developed as a teaching toolkit offering 10 credits at Level 4. There is the option for certification at this stage which is linked to a professional requirement to undertake 20 hours of teaching in a professionally relevant situation. In addition, there is the opportunity to extend your study and progress to Part Two of either the PGCE PCET for graduates or the PCE PCET for non-graduates offered at Cardiff Met. 

The next Preparing to Teach in PCET course starts on 9 September 2024​. 

This degree will undergo a periodic review in 2023/4 to ensure the course content is and remains current. Should any changes to course content be made as a result of the review, all applicants will be informed once changes are confirmed.

Career Potential

The Preparing to Teach in PcET course stands as a programme in its own right and can also form part one of a three part qualification that leads to the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education/ Professional Certificate in Education in PCET. The Preparing to Teach in PCET programme is a part-time course of study that aims to provide you with the skills, knowledge, support and encouragement to teach learners in the post 16 or 14 –19  sector.

It has been devised to meet the minimum requirements expected of those teaching/training in the post-compulsory sector of education and training. The course is mapped to the new ETF standards for teaching.

Entry Requirements

Applicants wishing to enrol onto the course will need a Level 3 award/qualification in the subject that they are intending to teach (normally, the qualification would need to be Level 3). Please contact the programme Director if you are unsure of the level of your qualification.

Assessment

Assessment will provide the opportunity for you to gain objective and constructive feedback relating to your performance and progress. Full support will be given to undertake this assessment.

The module is formally assessed and students will be required to:-

1. Plan, deliver and evaluate a micro-teaching session to his/her peer group. This will consist of a 20-minute teaching session in a subject of their choice. Students will be required to apply the principles of adult learning to this assessment. 

2. Complete a written assignment relating to the Principles of Adult Learning.
