This is a full-time programme for students who wish to become Secondary Welsh teachers.

Two options are available for students according to individual background and experience.

The three-year programme is designed for students without HE credits, who wish to pursue a career in teaching Welsh.

 

Course Overview

The BA Secondary Education Welsh programme is designed to produce competent and confident secondary school teachers of Welsh as a second language. Subject knowledge is delivered in parallel with education studies and you will be able to place all academic work in the school context through regular school placements. The overall aim of the programme is to train new Welsh secondary teachers who can contribute to the raising of standards in schools by engaging in​ high quality and effective teaching.

The programme will enable you to become an effective classroom teacher in Welsh by developing:

  • Appropriate subject knowledge and understanding;

  • The skills of planning and class management and a range of teaching strategies and skills appropriate to the age, ability and levels of attainment of the pupil (11-16);

  • Pupils' active participation and enjoyment of their work and ensuring that they make discernible progress, particularly through assessment, recording and reporting procedures;

  • Personal and professional qualities, which will help to prepare students for a successful career in their chosen profession;

  • A critical understanding of the curriculum and pedagogy, linking this to Educational and subject-specific knowledge;

  • An understanding of a range of cross-curricular issues, the values and assumptions that underpin them and their application in school and classroom practice;

  • An understanding of pupils in school, their similarities and differences, particularly in terms of their needs, their behaviour, maturation and levels of attainment;

  • An ability to reflect critically on attainment and progress in Cardiff Met-based contexts and school-based experiences and use these skills to improve their pr​actice;

The programme achieves these aims by the establishment of a programme structure with an integrated pattern of school and Cardiff Met-based work that enables statutory requirements to be met.

Please note: The programme also includes a non-QTS pathway for those students who do not opt to follow a teaching placement in the final year. This non-QTS pathway will allow trainees to work with learners in a range of roles (e.g. supporting learners in the Welsh classroom). This route will lead to the BA Secondary Education Welsh degree 11-16 (Hons) without QTS.

Please note: It is very likely that Standards for Qualified Teacher Status will change in June 2017 to be implemented for programmes starting in September 2017. This is a Welsh Government directive.

​Course Content​

Students will be placed in Partnership Schools in the South Wales area. The first year will contain subject-based studies, Education modules and an observation placement in school. Year 2 and 3 will then develop subject knowledge, pedagogy, and Education. Both years will contain a block placement, which will involve observation of good practice, team teaching and lesson delivery. Students will leave the programme equipped with the skills to respond to present and future challenges in education and to become reflective practitioners. The programme is based on the curriculum for 11-16 (up to GCSE), and meets the needs for teachers at this age-range in the Secondary sector.

Learning & Teaching​

Methods of delivery include lectures supported by tutorials, seminars, workshops, practicals, student led seminars, invited speakers, educational visits and blended learning. The virtual learning environment, Moodle, is also used as a learning and teaching tool. Lecture notes, seminar information, presentations and web site links are made available at key points for students to access. In addition, general academic information is regularly placed on Moodle, allowing students to access additional information and communicate with lecturers / fellow students. Discussion boards are used to facilitate means of communication and encourage online debate centred on identified educational issues between students.

An appropriate variety of teaching / learning methods have been carefully selected to provide a challenging and enriching learning experience. These methods have been designed to facilitate the development of the student's subject knowledge and competence in relation to professional and curriculum knowledge. Students are encouraged to undertake independent learning in all modules, thus supplementing and consolidating knowledge and understanding of their subject, pedagogy and Educational issues. There are regular opportunities throughout the programme for students to review their personal progress taking responsibility for planning and executing their own learning.​

Assessment

​Learning outcomes are assessed within modules through a variety of methods, including examinations, programme-work, essays, presentations, and assessed practicals/orals. Careful attention is paid to the development of a wide range of skills appropriate to the individual pathway subjects. A variety of assessment techniques are utilised throughout the programme, and attention is given in programme design to ensure that assessment workload is realistic and manageable in both pathways for all students. Assignments are used not only to evaluate progress on the programme but also as a resource through which students develop understanding about the process of delivery and evaluation in education.

The above methods of assessments serve as a preparation to enable students to have a greater understanding of assessment in the National Curriculum. Module tutors endeavour to reflect the assessment procedures utilised in the National Curriculum (2008) in KS3 / KS4. Students are expected to complete some assignments individually and some in conjunction with peers. Where appropriate, an element of peer evaluation may be incorporated into these assignments, which involve presentation to the group. Peer evaluation will not contribute to the formal process of summative assessment.

Employability & Careers​

Graduates of the course will be registered for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) allowing entry to the teaching profession at secondary level in Welsh. Graduates from this course will have strong career prospects in their chosen subject in the secondary sector. 

Non-QTS graduates will be able to work in a Secodnary school in a range of roles (such as one to one support, working with groups of learners with Additional Needs, LSA work).

Entry Requirements​ and How to Apply

All applicants must have GCSE (or equivalent) English Language and Mathematics at grade B or above (grade 5 or above for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England​) to be accepted on the programme. If applicants do not have GCSE grade B in English Language or Maths at application, they will be required to resit these subjects before joining the programme. An alternative route to resitting the required GCSEs is also available in the form of an Equivalency test.

GCSE Equivalents:

Cardiff Metropolitan University will accept equivalent qualifications for the GCSE requirements, which include examinations undertaken with Equivalency Testing and with the University of South Wales. Equivalency Testing will be holding test days at the Cyncoed Campus at Cardiff Metropolitan University on the 31st​ of March, 27th of May and 26th of August 2016. Further information concerning these test days are available on Equivalency Testing.

Applicants who meet the essential criteria for courses which lead to QTS at Cardiff Metropolitan University will be required to sit Pre Entry tests in Literacy and Numeracy, click the 'Tests' tab to find out more. Tests will be completed and supervised under 'exam' conditions. The tests will be undertaken as part of the interview day.

Applicants requested to sit these tests with additional needs will need to notify us immediately so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Applicants are required to have:​

104 UCAS points from at least 2 A levels to include grades CC, one to be in Welsh. Non A Level Welsh students, or students undertaking other Level 3 qualifications, must display a firm knowledge of Welsh. 

Welsh applicants must display a good level of conversational Welsh and must demonstrate the potential to achieve high standards in the study of the Welsh language.

Applicants from non-traditional backgrounds are strongly invited to apply, but must fulfil the basic GCSE requirements as noted above, whilst demonstrating relevant subject skills in Welsh.

Selection Procedure:
Selection is normally based on the receipt of a completed UCAS application and interview. All students will be considered on their individual merits and potential to develop as effective Welsh teacher during the programme.

Tests

Literacy Test 

There will be two tests for undergraduate applicants:

  • The first will test spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension. This test will be completed electronically on the day of interview but a printable, sample copy of the paper is available here. This test will be 30 minutes long. To prepare for the first literacy test, applicants should work through the sample paper provided. In addition, the current literacy skills test in England, as found on the DfE website, will also serve as a useful reference tool as the tests are similar in content.

  • The second will test comprehension skills.

Welsh applicants will be required to read and respond to an article in Welsh, demonstrating an understanding of the content and responding to the points raised. Candidates will be required to respond in English and Welsh, reflecting on their own personal experiences of Education and learning. This second test will be 45 minutes long, with a word count of approximately 250 words (1 side of A4). Click here​ for the link to exemplar paper.

This task will assess the ability to:

  • Express ideas and information clearly, precisely and accurately;
  • Write appropriately for the intended audience and purpose, engaging the interest of the reader;
  • Write for the intended audience and purpose using an academic style where appropriate;
  • Select and prioritise information to construct a coherent argument;
  • Use a variety of accurately punctuated sentence and paragraph structures to control progression, matching style to audience and purpose;
  • Use and spell accurately a wide range of appropriate, ambitious vocabulary to convey precise meaning.

Numeracy Test 

There will be one numeracy test which focuses on the functional mathematics which teachers need in their professional role.

  • The test will be completed electronically on the day of interview but a printable sample copy of the paper is available in English here or​ Welsh here.
  • Calculators will not be allowed but candidates will be provided with paper for jottings and notes.
  • The test will be 30 minutes long.
  • To prepare for the numeracy test, applicants should work through the sample paper provided. In addition, the current numeracy skills test in England, as found on the DfE website, will also serve as a useful reference tool, including Numeracy Practice Paper 2 and Numeracy Practice Paper 3.

English and Welsh versions of the question paper will be provided. Applicants can choose to answer in either language.

Interview

Oral skills of candidates will be assessed at interview and applicants will be required to respond to questions both in English and Welsh.​
