My particular interests in post-compulsory education revolve around the nature
of adult learning and the consequent effectiveness of education and training. I
think these things have become more important than ever as market forces and
vocationalism have been imposed on education and training in the UK and Lifelong
Learning [as far as anyone can define it] has become their latest home. I would
like to see higher education integrated into an all-embracing post-compulsory
system that delivered genuine access and was properly resourced.
I have a
background in the NHS and have been teaching in post-compulsory education for 15
years, most of it at Cardiff Metropolitan University. In that time I have taught
a wide range of courses at very different levels and have been able to develop
some kind of an overview of the sector and the way it works; change happens on a
weekly basis however, and I'm still learning.
The one common theme, and the
thing that I enjoy most about my work, is the liberating effect education can
have on learners; knowledge really is power!
