Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs - Lesley Griffiths launched the New Product Development for Competition for Welsh Schools at the Royal Welsh Show on 19th July 2016 with Food Innovation Wales Food Centres.

By developing a new welsh recipe or food/drink product there is an opportunity for four young people to win an iPad each.

Recipe and product development is a major part of the role of food technologists working in food and drink manufacturing businesses.

This competition aims to highlight the role of food technologists, showing the science that is involved, to encourage more people to explore a food and drink manufacturing career.

Recipe competition to win an iPad

Food Innovation Wales (FIW), specialise in assisting the food and drink manufacturing industry with technical issues such as food quality, food safety, food legislation, new product development and nutrition, using extensive knowledge and experience of Food Science and Technology.

FIW aims to increase the number of young people entering careers in the food and drink manufacturing industry in Wales by promoting careers within the sector. There are many well paid jobs in this industry with excellent career prospects. However, the food and drink manufacturing industry suffers with an image problem.

Many people think that food and drink manufacturing is low paid, has poor working conditions and is for low-skilled workers, when in fact the opposite is true. Almost all food science and technology graduates in Wales are employed within 6 months of leaving Cardiff Metropolitan University, and most start on an annual salary exceeding £20,000. Employers have included international companies such as Pepsi Co, Hotel Chocolat, 2 Sisters and Dawn Meats to regional companies such as Prima Foods, Beacons Foods and Abergavenny Fine Foods.

To promote the industry as the successful career that it is, we would like to invite young people from your school to enter an exciting competition. Entrants must be 11-16 and must submit a novel recipe from one of the two categories listed below. Four winners will be picked via a panel of Food and Drink Industry professionals, winners from each category will win an iPad.
