My role at the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre

I am one of the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre Technologists. I work with many Welsh food and drink industry partners to develop technical systems and ensure quality standards are maintained throughout their processes. This may involve support with writing HACCP plans, review of process documentation, nutritional analysis, review of labelling, sensory evaluation, chemical analysis, or support with third party audit preparation in the form of internal audits. I also work on consultancy and research projects, as and when required.


Previous Experience

Cardiff Metropolitan University (2004 – present)

  • Determination of IgA levels in saliva samples as an indicator of fitness levels
  • Determination of DerP1 and DerF1 in dust samples as an indication of dust mite levels
  • Listeria detection and identification
  • Shelf life testing of various food products
  • Projects investigating the antimicrobial properties of honey
  • Glycaemic load testing of foods using blood glucose monitoring methods
  • A Welsh Office funded on-going study looking at allergy and respiratory illness in a cohort of 500 young adults in the South Wales area
  • Velindre NHS Trust project mapping Cancer Education Provision in the South East Wales region

 

Recent research projects (2015 – 2021):

  • Welsh Government Food Sector Development Framework: "Food for the Future". A Food, Health and Nutrition Project.
  • Welsh Government Food Division project to Support the Food and Drink Sector: Understanding the Barriers to Accreditation in the Food and Drink Sector in Wales.
  • Welsh Government Food Division project to Support the Food and Drink Sector: Remote auditing using Smart technology
  • Independent verification of non-conformances for scheme owner

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

  • BSc (Hons) degree in Microbiology from Cardiff University (graduated 2002)
  • Masters in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Public Health from Bristol University (graduated 2006)
