My role at the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre

I have worked for Cardiff Metropolitan University for 18 years and have been working in the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre (FIC) since it opened many years ago.

My role involves working closely with the FIC's Director (as a PA) and the Business Operations Manager to ensure that robust organisational systems and procedures are in place to support the FIC stakeholders, partner agencies and project participants, whilst supporting the business operations and administrative requirements of the FIC, including project activity to EU standards.

My responsibilities include coordinating and controlling business operations, administration of monitoring systems and procedures of approved funding programmes (EU and other), and activities as determined by the FIC Director.  In addition, through the Business Operations Manager, I provide administrative and operational support specific to FIC projects and commercial activities.

Business opertaional duties include managing department databases with regards to data entry and quality assurance checks for contract management; establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels; responsible for managing the procurement processes within the FIC; supporting the effective administration of HR Management; monitor, manage and respond to telephone calls, emails and mail correspondence; provide confidential support to the Director in organising Board meetings and minuting these meetings; maintain effective and good working relationships with a range of internal and external parties including liaison with senior managers.

Previous Experience

I began working at UWIC in 1998 and my first role was Secretary to the Dean of Academic affairs (Dr Chris Griffith) and the Dean of Research (Dr Eleri Jones).  Just after a year of employment, due to faculty changes, I had to apply for a job under Dr Chris Griffith (now Professor), which was the Administrative Assistant for the Food Research and Consultancy Unit.

My role included general administration duties for the unit but also involved typing up Powerpoint presentations and journal articles for Professor Griffith, along with producing work for other researchers employed by the unit.  I also booked travel to conferences for staff as and when required along with other procurement duties.

Within the unit, David Lloyd worked with industry on Knowledge Transfer Programmes and generally aiding the food manufacturing sector.  When Professor Griffith retired in 2009 the Food Research and Consultancy Unit became ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre and my role then became focussed in the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre as an Administrative Assistant.

Previous to this I worked for a software house, Lakewood Computer Systems, in St Mellons, Cardiff.  I was a receptionist / secretary during my time there.  My role consisted of greeting guests and general secretarial duties along with typing up software specifications for the software teams and liaising with the Managing Directors.  I was also responsible for procurement for the company, including booking accommodation, flights, hire cars and ordering computer hardware.
