WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits


​The third qualification in the series, this is aimed at people who work within the trade in some capacity and who therefore have some previous knowledge. This course covers the same wine and spirit areas as the certificate but in more depth. It also covers the subjects of UK and EU legislation and social responsibility and the commercial application of such knowledge. The course consists of 15 two hour lectures (6-8.30pm) with wine tasting and finishes with an exam which takes the form of written and tasting papers.

Course Length: 
Part time evening class, January to May over 15 weeks.

Entry Requirements: 
WSET Level 2
Sufficiently good prior knowledge, to be established via consultation with the course leader

Course Content:

  • Wine Production

  • Identify the characteristics of the principal wines of the world

  • Still wines of the world

  • Sparkling wines of the world

  • Liqueur wines of the world

  • Spirits and liqueurs

  • Information and advice for customers and staff

  • Identify and assess the quality and commercial value of wine

  • Legal and social responsibility in relation to the sale of alcohol in retail outlets

  • Examination

Course Objectives:
The qualification provides a comprehensive coverage of the wines and spirits of the world. It develops food and wine matching skills and tasting techniques, introduces the student to wine fault identification and social issues related to the provision of alcoholic beverages.
