Cardiff Met offers a number of routes for post graduate research study and, in most cases, both full time and part time study options are available.

Following a traditional route, you could study for the award of either an MPhil or PhD.  The MPhil is awarded for the production of a thesis of up to 60,000 words which provides a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge or, an original contribution to learning or knowledge.  A PhD is awarded for the production of a thesis of up to 100,000 words or equivalent and will need to show an original and significant contribution to knowledge brought about through a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge. Both programmes can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis.

Alternatively, you may decide to follow a Professional Doctorate which combines a taught component with the production of a thesis of up to 60,000 words and a portfolio of professional development.  The suite of Professional Doctorates offered at Cardiff Met is wide ranging and encompasses research interests from across the institution.  A full list of Professional Doctorate programmes is included in the Postgraduate prospectus. The main Professional Doctorate programmes offered by the School of Management are the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) and the Doctorate in Engineering (DEng). The programmes are aimed at professional managers / engineers from a wide range of business and industry sectors and normally requires candidates to lead a significant strategic management project. Both the DBA and DEng are equivalent to that of a PhD but focus primarily upon identifying how professional practice will change as a result of the new knowledge developed and generated from the Professional Doctorate programmes. Due to the nature of the programme and the need to show a clear and well articulated contribution to professional practice, the programmes are only offered on a Part-Time basis.
