My work concentrates on helping people in public and private organisations understand the assumptions they share about the Design and Control of work and whether those assumptions are helpful in delivering purpose or delivering purpose better.  Raising awareness of shared attitudes can enable people to develop assumptions that have the potential to create greater value; reduce costs and make organisations better places to work.

From my employment as a Research Fellow at Cardiff University’s Lean Enterprise Research Centre in 1994 I have been involved in conducting funded research projects that have secured institutional benefit, research publications and impact case studies.  Initially these research projects concentrated on standard Lean interventions.  More recently I have developed a research interests that exhibit a more sophisticated understanding of institutional process and responses to improvement that concentrate on interpretive methods to explore the effectiveness of interventions to improve institutional effectiveness. I am a licensed practitioner of the Vanguard Method and work with Vanguard and Vanguard Wales to support clients who wish to understand their organisation’s potential from a systems thinking perspective.

My research draws primarily on Institutional theory to understand real-world practice in organisations and intervention theory in order to effect desired change.  I am especially interested in exploring how understanding concepts such as: De-coupled leadership practices, Ceremonialized behaviours, rationalised myths and the separation of the domains of talk and action can help organisations deliver greater public value for society and more positive experiences of work for their staff.  My current research interests include understanding the role of institutional elites in influencing improvement practice, the emergence of inter-professional co-operation, Management v’s Professional Control, and the role of professional integrity in maintaining the effectiveness of public and private services.
