Darryl is a Senior Lecturer in Events Management. Darryl joined the department in 2008 and teaches across a range of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management courses and modules. He is an active member of the Council for Hospitality Management Education, the Association for Events Management Education (AEME) and a HEA National Teaching Fellow.
Darryl's research interests are concerned with critical hospitality studies and the co-construction, delivery and performance of hospitable experiences. Darryl's PhD is entitled "Performative Hospitality" and is concerned with identifying the motivations and perceptions of staff in differing food and beverage servicescapes in order to better understand what constitutes the hospitable experience and how this knowledge can be utilised to enable hospitality practitioners to enhance and support the construction and delivery of hospitable experiences.
Darryl's teaching commitments include a wide teaching portfolio across all pathways within the department. Darryl is module leader for Sociology of Tourism, Hospitality and Events and module leader for Conferences, Exhibitions and Corporate Events. Darryl is part of the module team for Culture, Power and Identity, Diversity and Social Inclusion, Events in Context, Social Events and Party Planning, Venue Logistics and Operations, Event Design and Production, Personal Development Planning, Managing People and Organisations and Research Skills. He is also actively involved in undergraduate Tourism, Hospitality and Events management dissertation supervision.
Darryl is also first year tutor so has pastoral responsibility and academic oversight of the first year events students within the department.
