Dr Hughes is the Associate Dean Learning & Teaching (Home Programmes), and is responsible for all aspects of Learning & Teaching for the School's Cardiff based Programmes. He is an experienced Examination Board Chair regularly chairing Examination Boards at home and overseas.
Dr Hughes is also Chair of the University's Regulations and Special Cases Committee and has been responsible for overseeing the introduction and implementation of a number of key Regulations. He also sits on the University's Senior Fellow/Fellow HEA Recognition Panel.
Dr Hughes joined the University in October 2001 and taught on a variety of computing courses mainly in the areas of programming and database development. Prior to this he worked for 8 years as a computing lecturer at Ystrad Mynach College, during which time he obtained a PGCE qualification. He also worked as a Research Associate at UWCC developing a simulation program for assessing the risk to pedestrians at pelican crossings in areas controlled by urban traffic control systems! This research was sponsored by the Department of Transport's Road Research Laboratory (TRRL).
He has both a PhD degree and BSc degree from the University of Wales and his research involved the development of simulation programs and underlying models in the area of semiconductor device modelling.
Dr Hughes served as Head of Department from 2006 – 2012 overseeing both the Computing and Language/Cultural Studies areas. In 2012 he was appointed to the current Associate Dean post.
