Staff Overview

Dr Hughes is the Deputy Dean of Cardiff School of Management.

He joined the University in October 2001 as a Senior Lecturer following 8 years workings as a Computing and Information Systems lecturer at Ystrad Mynach College during which time he obtained a PGCE qualification.

As a Research Associate Cardiff University, he worked on a research project sponsored by the Department of Transport’s Road Research Laboratory (TRRL).

He has both a BSc degree and a PhD degree from the University of Wales.

Dr Hughes served as Head of Department from 2006 – 2012 with responsibility for the strategic deployment of staff resource and line management of staff in the Computing and Language/Cultural Studies areas.

Within this role he led all Validation and Periodic Review Events for the department.

He has had responsibility for the strategic and operational aspects of learning and teaching in the School since 2012 including staff recruitment and workload.

He is an experienced Examination Board Chair regularly chairing Examination Boards at home and overseas, and has chaired Validation and Periodic Review events across the university.

Dr Hughes has served for many years as Chair of the University’s Regulations and Academic Handbook Committee and has been responsible for overseeing the introduction and implementation of a number of key Regulations. He has also previously chaired Cardiff Met’s Academic Quality and Standards Committee.

Teaching

​Dr Hughes has taught on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and has also supervised PhD and Professional Doctorate students.

His background and experience has meant that he is equally at home teaching technical Computing subjects and subjects relating to Information Systems Development in business organisations.

Research

​Dr Hughes’s PhD research involved the development of simulation programs and underlying models in the area of semiconductor device modelling.

In connection with his TRRL sponsored research at Cardiff University he developed a simulation program for assessing the risk to pedestrians at pelican crossings in areas controlled by Urban Traffic Control systems!

Other Projects and activities

​Dr Hughes has worked on the following key projects and areas of activity at Cardiff Met:

  • 2012 FdSc ITMB Foundation Degree programme. A project involving collaboration with the Open University, Bridgend College and Coleg y Cymoedd. Cardiff Met was the lead partner in this project which secured c£430k funding via the HEFCW One Wales initiative.
  • Development of and support for the Research Students Tracking database which served as a corporate system from 2007 – 2015. The system integrated the University Student Record System with Research specific data and involved collaboration with multiple stakeholders across the University.
  • Development of the Business Objects universe and associated reports for the University’s corporate Timetable System.
  • Membership of the University Digital Strategy Committee.
