Panicos Georghiades graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Wales Swansea, followed by a Diploma in Industrial and Technological Management and an MSc in Management Information Systems. After a year's postgraduate research in "Computer Training needs of Small Businesses" he spent two years teaching Programming at the European Business Management School, University of Wales Swansea.
He then moved to industry where he worked as a contracted programmer and consultant for the West Glamorgan Health Authority, Imperial Metal Industries, Timet UK and British Steel. For most of the 1990s and while studying for a PhD in Multimedia, he worked as a freelance writer for many newstands computer magazines evaluating software and hardware products and was a columnist on Microsoft Windows and Multimedia.
After completing his PhD in 1995 he became involved with the development of multimedia CD-ROMs and web-sites for InternetWorks magazine, VNU Publications, Departments of the University Wales Swansea, Musicnow and Professional Development Europe.
Panicos joined the Business School in 2001 as a part-time Senior Lecturer in Multimedia. The multimedia modules he teaches are available within a number of the School's degree courses. In these modules students learn about the technologies and methods used in the production of video, sound, graphics, animation and the other digital media which form the main ingredients of many CD-ROMs, DVDs and Internet sites.
Students learn how these media are combined into multimedia presentations, computer training applications, marketing and advertising tools, electronic books, computer games and alike. The course also covers aspects of human-computer interaction, design methods and theories, commercial issues of multimedia and many other topics and gives a good basis to anyone wanting to get involved in this subject, either for career purposes or for academic research.
