Stephen’s background is in the hospitality and catering industry which he first entered as a graduate trainee. He worked in the industry for several years working in different types of hospitality businesses including SMEs and international brand operations. Eventually he decided to move into education and started his teaching career at Reading College. Several moves within the further education sector occurred before he moved into the higher education sector when he joined Cardiff Met in 1997.
Prior to joining Cardiff Met Stephen gained an MSc in Education Management, followed by an MA Management from Manchester Metropolitan University. He uses both these qualifications in his teaching which is primarily focussed on marketing and strategic management. He also maintains his industry links through both his research and by visiting students who are on placement undertaking industrial work experience. As such Stephen is keen to ensure that the curriculum he teaches reflects the changing needs of the progressive, and increasingly diverse, service sector industry.
Stephen’s PhD considered stakeholder attitudes towards vocational education and development with a specific focus on the suitability of NVQs for the hospitality industry. The study was concerned with analysing the attitudes of some of the key stakeholders (including employers and FE/HE lecturers) towards NVQs. The results revealed that there are perceived strengths with the NVQ model, but that the weaknesses are significant and many respondents would welcome the introduction of an alternative model. The study concludes by proposing an alternative model and making recommendations for future developments in hospitality skills development.
This continuing research interest is complemented by work that Stephen undertakes outside Cardiff Met for Edexcel as a Chief Examiner for Hospitality and Catering, and as an External Examiner in other universities.
Outside Cardiff Met Stephen’s hobbies include travelling, the theatre and cinema, and watching rugby league.
