Cardiff Met Announced as Wales Technology Awards 2019 Headline Sponsor

Cardiff Metropolitan University has been unveiled as the headline sponsor for this year’s Wales Technology Awards.

The Wales Technology Awards are run by the ESTnet, the network for the Welsh tech industry, which champions the outstanding achievements and innovations made by Wales’ 3,000 technology companies.

In 2018, the University launched its Cardiff School of Technologies, and academics continue to work closely with technology companies and industry bodies to develop a portfolio of industry focused degree programmes. The School offers degrees in computer science and software engineering, games design and development, data science, information security, robotics, electronics and systems engineering.

The awards ceremony, which will be held at the capital’s City Hall on 20 June, covers all aspects of Wales’ vibrant technology industry. Previous winners over the past seven years include Silvertel, WeBuildBots, DevOpsGroup, AMPLYFI and Wales Interactive.

The winner of last year’s ESTnetNG Tech Prize, which helps young people with a passion for technology fulfil their talent and ambition and includes a £2,000 prize, was Cardiff Metropolitan University graduate David Barton, now Managing Director of med-tech company Kaydiar.

Prof Jon Platts, Dean of Cardiff School of Technologies said: “We are delighted to support the ESTnet as the headline partner of the Wales Technology Awards 2019. The Cardiff School of Technologies is designed to meet the employment needs of south Wales' growing tech sector. We partner with a wide range of technology-focused companies to ensure that we are developing the skills required by employers, in a sector with an increasing number of highly-paid graduate level careers.

“The Wales Technology Awards provide an excellent opportunity to recognise the wide range of sector-leading work being carried out by Welsh tech businesses on both a national and a global scale. We look forward to learning more about the innovative work taking place across the sector.”

Avril Lewis MBE, managing director of ESTnet said; “We’re delighted to announce Cardiff Metropolitan University as this year’s Headline Partner for the Wales Technology Awards.

“Institutions like Cardiff Metropolitan University are vital to helping Wales develop our workforce of the future and ensuring that Wales grows and establishes itself as a beacon for the technology industry. The ESTnet plays a key role in bridging the gap between academia and business, helping accelerate innovation and showcasing talent.

“Cardiff Metropolitan University is a fitting partner for this year’s awards, especially considering that Cardiff Metropolitan University graduate David Barton was last year’s winner of the coveted ESTnetNG Tech Prize. David and his company Kaydiar are a perfect representation of the values of the awards – a combination of entrepreneurial spirit, innovation and talent.”
