Cardiff Met Staff Selected for 2017 Welsh Crucible Programme



Three academics from Cardiff Met have beaten off strong competition from across Wales to take part in the 2017 Welsh Crucible programme. 

Dr Esyin Chew from Cardiff School of Management, Dr Taslima Begum who works between Cardiff School of Management and PDR – International Centre for Design & Research, along with Dr Dimitra Fimi from Cardiff School of Education, will take part in this award-winning programme of personal, professional and leadership development. 

Now in its seventh year, the Welsh Crucible supports research-inspired innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration in Wales.

Funded by a consortium of Welsh universities, in partnership with the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), there is a high demand for places on Welsh Crucible from researchers who are demonstrating excellence in their respective fields.

Every year, 30 researchers are selected to participate in a series of residential workshops or 'skills labs' where participants explore how they can benefit from working with researchers in other disciplines, how their research can have greater impact, and how they can build international research careers in Wales.

Taslima, Esyin and Dimitra will attend a number of sessions starting later this month in Swansea, Cardiff and Aberystwyth.

Participants continue to build collaborations with each other beyond the formal programme and the Welsh Crucible alumni network allows connections to be made between cohorts.

Speaking about the news, Director of Research and Graduate Studies, Professor Scott Fleming, said:

"Cardiff Met's involvement with the Welsh Crucible programme builds year on year and the inclusion of Taslima, Esyin and Dimitra for 2017 further strengthens our record of engagement and achievement in this excellent opportunity for career development in research.

"Previous successful applicants have been able to capitalise on their experiences of the programme and benefitted the wider university as well as developing their personal academic careers."
