The Cardiff Met Archers Women's Basketball team played their first WBBL game in the brand new Archers' Arena last Saturday in front of a large crowd, taking the win against Team Northumbria with a final score of 58-55.
300 fans filled the bleachers as the Archers Under 8s and Under 10s walked out with the players, and Jukebox Collective street dance group performed a great routine.
The new £5 million sports hall on the Cyncoed Campus was opened in January of this year and completes phase one of the University's new sports complex development. The sports hall has been named the Archers' Arena which has been chosen to reflect the brand that unites the key partners who use the facility - Cardiff Met Sport, Cardiff School of Sport and the Cardiff Met Student Union Sport clubs.
Director of Sport, Chris Jennings said "We are delighted that our Women's basketball team have won their first WBBL game in our new state of the art arena in such a dramatic fashion. It was a proud day for us here at Cardiff Met.
"The new Archers' Arena is a fantastic facility which has already proven a success with our students and the local community with the launch of new sporting programmes and additional training slots for basketball, netball and badminton.
"This new facility will enable us to host a wide variety of performance level sport and will allow us to continue our support of grass roots sport -the University's junior basketball and netball academies are based at the venue, and a brand new Badminton Academy, in partnership with Badminton Wales, which was launched earlier this year, will be based at the Arena."
