Cardiff Metropolitan University has signed an Official Partner sponsorship with the Lloyds Bank Cardiff Half Marathon, creating opportunities for students and staff to get involved in Wales' largest mass participation event.

The partnership will be focused around the engagement of existing students and staff, marketing the event to prospective students and creating positive publicity and brand exposure for both parties.

As part of their rights package Cardiff Met has 150 runner places and five relay team places that have been distributed between 6th form colleges, existing students and members of staff.

The Cardiff Half Marathon, the second largest half marathon in the UK, will take place on Sunday, October 5th, while a family fun run will take place the day before on Saturday, October 4th.

The race starts outside Cardiff Castle before heading down past Cardiff City Stadium on its way to Penarth before finishing at Cardiff Bay.

21,000 people are expected to take part in the race and will be cheered on by around 40,000 spectators who will come from in and around the city to watch the race.

Runners will follow a course which has won the World Half Marathon bid to bring the race to Cardiff in March 2016.

CEO of Run4Wales, Matt Newman, said: "We have always admired the fantastic sport facilities that Cardiff Metropolitan University offers to those wanting to train and develop their sporting talent.

"Some of our best known Welsh athletes have a strong affiliation with the University, so an official partnership between Cardiff Metropolitan and Wales' largest endurance race, the Lloyds Bank Cardiff Half Marathon, seems natural.

"This partnership will really cement the relationship between Cardiff Metropolitan University and athletics in Wales."

Dave Cobner, Director of Sport at Cardiff Metropolitan University added: "This partnership with Run4Wales provides a wealth of opportunities for our students to gain real life event management experience and will help in our drive to encourage more students - both current and future - to become involved in health and in promoting physical activity and competitive athletics."
