Cardiff & Met Hockey Club have successfully secured a promotion to the EuroHockey Club Champions Trophy in 2016 after an impressive performance at the EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge held in Zurich, Switzerland last month.
The club is an amalgamation of Cardiff hockey players. The majority are current Cardiff Met students and Cardiff Met alumni with the rest of the team made up from players in the local area.
Cardiff & Met Hockey Club was one of eight teams from across Europe who met at Rottweiss Hockey Club in Zurich last month.
In the first match against Bohemians Praha, Czech Republic, the club started with a solid performance despite a few offences that resulted in cards and consequential time with less than the full complement. The club were delighted to come away with a 3-1 victory. Cardiff & Met continued their winning streak with a 3-1 win against Servette Hockey Club, Geneva on Day two.
On the penultimate day of the championship they had the most challenging game yet against Rotweiss Wettingen Hockey Club, Zurich. The team was once again reduced to nine players after a yellow and green card, but Cardiff & Met's strong defence kept the opposition at bay. The final score reflected the high level of play from both teams with a draw of 0-0.
Cardiff & Met went into the final day, full of confidence and didn't disappoint. In their final match they sealed their promotion in a victory against HAHK Mladost, Croatia, with an emphatic 9-0 score.
Head coach, Walid Abdo, commented on the team's success, ''I think it was an incredibly enjoyable four days watching the boys play some seriously good hockey and showing the European community what a good team we are. It's always nice to win a gold medal no matter what competition it is.''
As a result the team have secured promotion into the EuroHockey Club Champions Trophy which will take place in 2016.
