Today, Cardiff Metropolitan University welcomes Sergei Aleinik, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to the Cardiff School of Art and Design.

Cardiff Met is one of the UK's most internationalised universities with partnerships around the globe. Many of the University's degrees offered in Cardiff are also run through its partner universities. Current partners are in Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Greece, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, South Africa, Singapore and Sri Lanka.

During his visit to the University, the Ambassador and his delegation, including representatives from the region's Trade and Economy sectors, will meet with staff and students from the University's School of Art and Design, to promote the use of materials from the Eastern European region, particularly the use of traditional cloths in the Fashion industry.

Professor Cara Aitchison, President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff Metropolitan University said of the visit: "Today, we are delighted to welcome the Ambassador for Belarus and his colleagues to Cardiff Metropolitan University.

"The University's purpose is to deliver high quality and high impact practice-focused and professionally recognised education, research and innovation in partnership with our students and industry.  The Ambassador's visit demonstrates how we combine our global outlook with our industry-focussed approach to teaching and research and marks the development of a burgeoning relationship between the University and Belarus. We look forward to seeing this relationship flourish and grow in the months and years to come."

Professor Olwen Moseley, Dean of the School of Art and Design said: "This visit comes at a hugely exciting time for the Cardiff School of Art and Design. This year sees the first graduating cohort of our BA Fashion Design degree and this month we are welcoming Fashion and Textiles Masters students, building on the increasing popularity of this industry both here in the UK and internationally.

"The creative industries in Wales are built on a foundation of craftsmanship and innovation, a heritage we are proud to champion here at the school. The Ambassador's generous gift of fabric to our Fashion Design department will enable our students to work with the highest quality products, showcasing their creativity and passion for working with traditional materials."

Sergei Aleinik has been Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland since 2013, and is visiting Wales as part of a trade mission to promote products from the region in Eastern Europe.
