Development Services

Research has suggested a clear relationship between the quality of leadership and team performance. One of the important determinants of leadership quality identified by studies was an openness to learning whether through qualifications, formal training or development activities.

Reflecting the demands of elite sport we have established a bespoke and flexible CPD framework to enable senior leaders (whether executives, coaches or players) to maintain their personal effectiveness in complex and competitive environments.

Real Time Coaching

Real Time Coaching involves a School of Sport & Health Sciences executive coach discreetly observing a leader, normally over the course of a day, in their professional environment as they engage with various challenges and different people in a number of work settings.

Following observation there is an opportunity to reflect on the reality of leadership practice and provide constructive and immediate feedback on what worked well and what might enhance effectiveness in the future.

We can also provide traditional coaching through a series of monthly goal setting, discussion and review meetings.

Tailored Education

Elite sport leaders have busy schedules and shifting priorities. This can mean regular attendance at traditional CPD workshops is difficult to maintain. Tailored education enables a leader to select for themselves topics of relevant personal learning and development from a wide range of subjects related to leadership and management.

Sessions are then delivered on a 1 to 1 basis normally in 2 hour tutorials at a time and place tailored to individual needs.

We can also provide information and guidance on relevant academic qualifications at undergraduate and post graduate level.

Flexible Mentoring

The demands on the modern sport leader have increased due to professionalism, higher expectations and greater accountability. Leaders have access to a personal mentor to discuss pressing leadership challenges and issues as they arise in a confidential and safe environment.

Mentoring can be provided flexibly in person, via Skype, over the telephone or by email as required by individual circumstances.

We can also provide regular updates via email on the latest research and thinking related to elite sport leadership.

Faculty

Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences is a recognised centre of excellence within the UK. We have established a national reputation for the quality of our teaching, research and enterprise work.

While our roots are in academic endeavour and creating learning environments we are also grounded in the realities and demands of professional sport and contemporary leadership.

Executive coaches and professional mentors are senior faculty with significant practical experience of the elite sport environment.
