Jose is a Lecturer in Physical Education and Youth Sport in the Cardiff School of Sport, Cardiff Metropolitan University.  

​He is year tutor to the Level 6 Sport and Physical Education program, and his teaching commitments include pedagogy, coaching and research process modules. Jose joined the School in 2015, after working as lecturer in Sports Coaching at University of Gloucestershire.

Jose is in the final stage of his PhD, which investigates coach and athlete's learning in team sports, using a TGfU approach which encourages the learner to reflect on the game's tactical constraints, promoting decision-making, skill execution, tactical understanding, and consequently, performance.

Research / Publications

My main research interests relate to teacher and student's learning, and how this learning is influenced by different pedagogical approaches such as Teaching Games for Understanding and Game Sense. This is extensive to the coaching context, in which I am interested in better understand coach and athlete's learning, decision-making, tactical awareness, critical reflection, and consequent performance.

I currently deliver on modules in the areas of PE and Pedagogy, sports coaching, and research process across the undergraduate programmes. I am also Year Tutor for Level 6 Sport & PE, and supervise a number of dissertation students.

​José is an experienced volleyball coach, that has played and coached at international level, and that on top of several league and cup titles, has been awarded 'Coach of the Year' by the South West Volleyball Association in 2012, and 'Performance Development Coach of Year 2014' by England Volleyball Association.

Additionally, José is a Sports Coach UK qualified Tutor, and Volleyball England Tutor.
