Carys Davies - BA in Accounting

First class accountancy career for Carys

Choosing a career can often be a difficult decision, but for Carys Davies, accountancy was always top of her list.

While studying at school for an A level in accountancy as well as in Maths and business studies, Carys decided to get some work experience with an accountancy firm before applying to university.

Carys said: “I already knew I enjoyed studying accountancy and my work experience placement confirmed it was definitely the career for me.”

She continued: “I applied and was accepted for the BA in Accounting at Cardiff Met, which is accredited by the ACCA, the global body for professional accountants.

“The accreditation of the course appealed to me, particularly as it meant I would be exempt from taking nine of the further professional ACCA exams once I graduated, whereas many courses only leave you with five exemptions.

“I was also really keen to study in Cardiff as it’s a fantastic city.

“The course itself was great. It’s mainly exam-based and quite rigorous, but that prepares you for working in the profession after graduation. I also felt I was given plenty of one-to-one support and feedback from tutors on the course which was really helpful.”

After graduating from Cardiff Met with a first class honours degree, Carys was soon snapped up by North Wales firm EW Owen & Co. as a Trainee Accountant.

Carys said: “I’m currently studying for the rest of my professional exams, but my degree background is still helping me - particularly in areas like strategic management which I have studied previously.”

She added: “I’m really pleased to have gone straight into employment in my chosen career and hope to go on to become a fully-qualified accountant.”
