Visiting the Disability Service for a meeting with a Disability Adviser

If you have specific needs when you start your study and need support in place from the first day of your studies, it is recommended that you contact the Disability Service to make an appointment to see a Disability Adviser or Mental Health Adviser prior to commencing your programme of study.  This is in order to ensure that we can co-ordinate this provision.

When you ring up to make your appointment, please ensure that you state you requirements for the visit, eg:

  • you will require parking space very near to Student Services
  • you will be bringing a BSL Interpreter
  • you have Anxiety Disorder and cannot sit in a small room with the door closed

An example of why it is best to liaise with the Disability Service as soon as you can prior to commencing your programme of study

Camille has mobility difficulties and will require a Personal Assistant to assist her in getting around during Fresher's Week and for the remainder of term.  Following her appointment, the Disability Adviser will liaise with the Support Worker co-ordinator to co-ordinate provision in readiness for Camille's attendance at Fresher's Week.  It would be ideal for Camille to meet the Personal Assistant prior to the first day of Fresher's Week.  If this is feasible*, a "meet and greet" will be co-ordinated prior to Fresher's Week.

Camille wants to study Biomedical Studies at undergraduate level.  She will need to set up a meeting with her course tutor in order to have a Risk Assessment carried out.  The Disability Adviser will likely attend the meeting and liase with the course thereafter.  It is therefore critical that Camille contacts the course and the Disability Service as early as possible prior to the start of the course

* it may not be feasible due to Camille living a considerable way away from Cardiff or Camille may only have been accepted onto a programme of study almost as soon as it is due to commence.
