Registering with a General Practitioner
If you are from outside Cardiff and moving to the area you will need to join a local GP's practice.
If you have a medical condition which may require emergency treatment e.g. diabetes or epilepsy, it is essential that a member of staff from your course is informed; it would also be sensible to advise friends, close fellow students and (in the case of resident students) student wardens who may be with you when such an occasion arises. This ensures your own safety and that correct, prompt treatment is given in an emergency situation.
First Aiders are available on Campus by dialling 2222 (this number will be on the back of your ID badge) – please familiarise yourselves with the First Aider near your work/course area.
Contraception/sexual health/family planning advice
Details of the Department of Sexual Health (DOSH) clinics are available in the Medical Centre. The clinics provide free, confidential advice on all aspects of sexual health: free pregnancy testing (with immediate results): cervical smears: well-woman checks and emergency contraception. Also see the Sexual Health link on the left of this page.
All prescriptions issued by a GP in Wales and dispensed from a chemist in Wales are FREE
Information on local dental practices and how to contact an emergency dentist in Cardiff is available in the medical centre, or follow the link on the left.
It is essential to obtain help as soon as possible to maximise your chances of preventing pregnancy. FREE Emergency contraception is available from DOSH clinics, your own G.P and at most local chemists.
