Throughout the course of your research, your supervisors will be your principal source of guidance and feedback. It is important that there is a good fit between your research interests and those of your supervisors. We recommend you approach the person or people you have in mind as supervisors informally before you submit your formal proposal to discuss your ideas and to gauge their interest. If you are uncertain of who to approach, or wish to enquire about the range of research degree expertise at CSAD, including possibilities for interdisciplinary supervision, please contact Dr. Stephen Thompson (contact details below).
When you make your informal approach, it would be helpful if you could provide a short CV (two pages maximum) and a 1,000 word draft proposal in which you set out:
1. the research topic or question on which you are likely to focus;
2. an outline of the debate or subject area in which your research will be located, with reference to the particular theories and practices (including names and publication or exhibition dates) that make the significance of your research interest clear;
3. the possible methods by which you plan to address or test your research question/topic, for example, with a practice-based PhD, the mode of your art practice, and the methods you will use to assess and contextualize your practice in the light of your topic/question;
4. why you are considering Cardiff School of Art and Design as the place to conduct your research;
5. a bibliography of all texts and sources cited;
6. your professional and/or personal reasons for wanting to undertake MPhil or PhD research.
