Staff Overview

Gareth joined Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2015 following a varied career that has included engineering, church ministry and teaching Philosophy and Sociology. Gareth has worked in Higher Education for over 20 years in a variety of role; community-based tutor, chaplain to Manchester universities, research fellow at Cardiff University specialising in research ethics, provider of research ethics training, and as a teaching fellow in the University of Bath.

Teaching

​Gareth is the Year Tutor for the CSM Foundation and leads the modules on ‘Academic and Professional Skills’ and ‘Developing a Research Project’

Research

​The current focus of Gareth’s research is an attempt to answer the question: ‘Can an understanding of university education as a relational / dialogical process serve as a philosophical groundwork for an HE that is liberatory and socially / ecologically just?

Areas of interest:

  • Philosophy of / as / in HE – especially values and ethics in HE, research ethics, tutorial
  • Foundation Years in HE
  • Human / Environment interactions – mobilities, ethics, learning
  • Cybernetic learning as grammar for inter/trans/pan disciplinary research and teaching
