“During the degree I completed a work placement module and this gave me my first insight into journalism. I ended up completing a week’s placement at WalesOnline and was able to gain valuable advice and information from experienced journalists. After graduating, I secured a job at WalesOnline and now do the job I love, day in, day out. I have covered all sorts of stories and my work has been impacting communities all over the UK. I wouldn’t have been able to do what I have done without my degree and experiences at Cardiff Met.”

“I have really enjoyed the practical lectures in my first two years on the course. The practical modules have included Digital Sports Media, Sports Broadcast Journalism and Culture, Media, and Sports Journalism. We had group tasks such as making podcasts about aspects of culture that relate to sport and creating uplifting promotional videos for a sport of our choice. I found this part of the course extremely useful because it aligns to my career aspirations.”

Meet the Team

“Before becoming an academic I worked in London for 15 years as a full-time journalist. I progressed from an Editorial Assistant onto Assistant Editor, Editor Managing Editor and Deputy Group Editor. While working for several years with different publishers and magazines I turned my focus to my passion – film, and to a career in trade journalism as Editor of Film and TV Production Review. My background in journalism and media informs and underpins the BA (Hons) Media & Communications.”

Robert Taffurelli
Media & Communications – BA (Hons) Programme Director

“Our Media degrees are suited to those that want to think both critically and creatively. My teaching philosophy is to foster participation and engagement within the classroom with a particular focus on designing activities that promote active learning. Throughout lectures, seminars and workshops students study the media through debates, discussions, problem-solving activities, group projects and independent practical tasks to ensure that our students are not just listening but are actively ‘doing’ and reflecting on their work.”

Nina Jones
Media & Communications – BA (Hons) Senior Lecturer

“My own journey into sport media started in my teenage years, working as a tea boy at my local newspaper in Newport. The energy and buzz of the newsroom there really sparked something in me, and seeing sports reporters heading out to matches on a Saturday afternoon meant I saw that there was a career which combined a passion for sports with media. When I first stepped into the BBC a few years later it was a really steep learning curve and using my experiences in the industry we’ve designed our BSc in Sport Media to make you ready for work.”
