Staff Profile Overview

Thanuja Mallikarachchi (S'12-M'17) received his B.Sc. (Eng.) degree with honours in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2011. From 2011 to 2013, he was a Senior Engineer at Virtusa (pvt) Ltd., Colombo, Sri Lanka. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, in 2017. From 2017 to 2018, he was a Research Fellow in Multimedia Communication at CVSSP. Currently, he is a Lecturer in Data Science and Informatics at the Cardiff School of Technologies, Department of Applied Computing and Engineering, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff, United Kingdom.

His research interests are video coding & communication, multimedia processing, computer vision, human pose and action recognition, machine learning and IoT.

Coding efficiency improvements in video coding algorithms and optimization strategies for fast, energy efficient video encoding and decoding. 

Use of machine learning algorithms for fast video encoding and transcoding algorithms.

Quality of Experience (QoE) prediction, modelling and improvement strategies for video coding and communication systems. 

Video content, network, end user device and QoE-aware video encoding, transcoding, communication and decoding systems for interactive multimedia applications.

Computer vision, and machine learning algorithms for human pose, action recognition for applications in robotics, health sciences, and human computer interaction.

Data collection, communication, and visualization on Internet of things (IoT) devices, IoT protocols (e.g., LoRAWAN) and IoT applications.
