My role at the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre

My key academic interests and specialisms include determination and linking cognitive (knowledge, attitudes, risk perceptions and self-reported practices), behavioural and microbiological data to assess/evaluate food safety risks. This also includes the development and evaluation of highly focused food safety education/communication materials and interventions for targeted ‘at-risk audiences’ and sectors in the food and drink industry.

My role within the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre (FIC) includes a variety of research approaches to facilitate evaluation of Welsh Government / European Union food and drink industry projects including KITE (1998-2015) and project HELIX (2016- to date). This includes benchmarking food safety/technical conformances in the food industry and evaluation of intervention effect; linking and comparing cognitive behavioural influences and using data to assess food safety culture within food (and drink) processing and manufacturing companies. In addition, research includes application of a value chain and supply chain analysis of food and drink manufacturing and processing (FDMP) businesses.

Additional responsibilities include supervision of post-doctorate, PhD and undergraduate research studies in the fields of consumer based research, food safety/hygiene, healthcare and the food industry. Key projects include: older adults food safety behaviours related to listeriosis; waste reduction in FDMP small and medium sized businesses (SMEs); food production and service efficiency in hospitals; dieticians delivery of food safety information to chemotherapy, renal and HIV/AIDS patients; airline food safety and food safety culture in small catering establishments.

I am actively involved in the proposal/application writing/submission and implementation of other research studies including: Food safety strategies for cancer patients; Evaluation of the acceptability of tablet-based and paper-based food-safety and nutrition interventions for carers of chemotherapy patients: a pilot study; Observational assessment of hand hygiene in FDMP SMEs in South Wales and Assessment of food safety information for dietitians.

Previous Experience

With more than 20 years of research experience, I have undertaken research in a variety of fields relating to food safety/hygiene and handling behaviours in range of settings including the domestic environment, hospitals, day nursery’s, food service environments, airlines and in the food industry.

I have been responsible and actively contributed, supervised and been the principle investigator for numerous mixed methods and multi-disciplinary research projects for organisations such as the UK Food Standards Agency, Laboratoires Rivadis and The Welsh Government. This has involved working with national / international collaborators, including Wageningen University, the NHS, PHLS and market research companies. Research undertaken has resulted in a proven publication track record (authored more than 130 peer reviewed publications / conference contributions 1996-2016).
