New Product Development Competition 2020

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s New Product Development competition has been postponed. If you would like to register your interest in taking part in future then please email Leanne Ellis (lellis@cardiffmet.ac.uk).

Product development is a major part of the role of food technologists working in food and drink manufacturing businesses.

This competition aims to highlight the role of food technologists, showing the science that is involved, to encourage more people to explore a food and drink manufacturing career.

By developing a new Welsh food or drink product there is an opportunity to win an iPad.

Product development competition to win an iPad

Food Innovation Wales (FIW), specialise in assisting the food and drink manufacturing industry with technical issues such as food quality, food safety, food legislation, new product development and nutrition, using extensive knowledge and experience of food science and technology.

FIW aims to increase the number of young people entering careers in the food and drink manufacturing industry in Wales by promoting careers within the sector. There are many well paid jobs in this industry with excellent career prospects. However, the food and drink manufacturing industry suffers with an image problem.

Many people think that food and drink manufacturing is low paid, has poor working conditions and is for low-skilled workers, when in fact the opposite is true. Almost all food science and technology graduates in Wales are employed within 6 months of leaving Cardiff Metropolitan University, and most start on an annual salary exceeding £20,000. Employers have included international companies such as Pepsi Co, Hotel Chocolat, 2 Sisters and Dawn Meats to regional companies such as Prima Foods, Beacons Foods and Abergavenny Fine Foods.

To promote the industry as the successful career that it is, we would like to invite young people from your school to enter an exciting competition. Entrants must be 11-16 and must submit a novel food or drink product from one of the three categories listed below. One winner will be picked via a panel of food and drink industry professionals and the prize is an iPad.

Categories:

  1. A product using primarily welsh ingredients

  2. A product to help young people increase their intake of fruit and/or vegetables

  3. A dessert product that has ‘no added sugar’
