Allied Clinical Health Hub

The Allied Clinical Health Hub (ACHH) is a sector leading clinical facility based on the University’s Llandaff campus. The ACHH provides our healthcare students with the opportunity to work with, from, and about each other in an authentic clinical setting that is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our local communities.

Our on-campus healthcare services are student led; students from a range of clinical professions take responsibility for actively organising and delivering care for patients supported by practice supervisors.

We offer a range of clinical services that includes general podiatry, musculoskeletal assessment and treatment, nail surgery, a physiotherapy led injury clinic, dietetics clinic, and speech and language therapy clinics. Future plans include the introduction of clinical psychology, dental screening and denture repair clinics.

Please see details of the services we currently provide below.

Nutrition and Dietetics Clinic

BSc Human Nutrition and Dietetics and the Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics are professionally accredited courses which require students to obtain a certain number of hours in clinical practice and meet a set of clinical competencies. Students undertake three placements of varying duration which ensure on graduation they are ready for clinical practice; these clinics are run in conjunction with health boards across Wales and ensure our on campus learning is practical, with real world examples of practice. Our core teaching team are qualified clinical dietitians who bring this experience to the course content. The Cardiff Met Dietetic clinic was set up in December 2023 in conjunction with Cardiff and the Vale Health Board; it provides students with additional clinical hours, ensures that staff maintain their clinical skills and assists the NHS with current waiting times. All referrals are from the community dietetics waiting list in the Cardiff and Vale Health Board; this provides students with a wide range of clinical conditions to experience and develop their skills in communication, nutritional diagnosis, clinical reasoning and goal setting.

This clinic encourages collaboration between university lecturers and our NHS colleagues and is the starting point for future developments such as community dietetic group interventions, and mores specialised clinics.

Podiatry Clinic

The Podiatry Clinic at Cardiff Metropolitan University is a student-led clinic, supervised by qualified podiatrists and lecturers. We host a range of different private clinics including general podiatry treatment, biomechanical appointments, and nail surgery. Patients do not need to contact their GP for a referral – please contact us and express your interest. Our appointments are £20 and cover most treatments excluding nail surgery.

Psychology Consultation Clinic

The ‘Consultation Clinic’ is one of the practice-based psychology clinics. The Consultation Clinic is where professional groups, academic departments and divisions can access psychological expertise. This helps them to support their goals to lead, innovate, design and add psychological expertise in their delivery of high standards of education, wellbeing, and clinical training for students and their professional teams. This work directly supports academic staff in managing the complex demands of their roles and indirectly supports student retention, wellbeing, and clinical skill development. The clinic provides a practice-based setting where undergraduate and postgraduate psychology research can be conducted under the supervision of clinical psychologist supervisors.

Reflective Practice Sessions is one example of the clinical activity involved in this clinic.

A reflective practice session is facilitated by a clinical psychologist and provides a valuable and focused space for professionals, leaders or teams to reflect, observe, process and learn in relation to their experiences in their work/specialist field. It is a supportive and developmental space for people to explore and understand their interactions, clinical decision making, team dynamics and the emotional impact of work or education. The need for reflective spaces is increasingly recognised in relation to issues of clinical effectiveness and safety in health and education, retention and wellbeing.

CMET NHS Vascular Psychology Clinic

A collaboration between Cardiff Met and NHS Vascular Psychology Services is in development to provide a Vascular Psychology Clinic. This will investigate and treat the psychosocial needs of patients with vascular disease in the NHS South East Wales Vascular Network. This clinic will provide placement opportunities for MSc Health Psychology students to enable them to progress to practitioner psychologist status.

Speech and Language Therapy Clinic

Students on the BSc Speech and Language Therapy go on placement in a variety of NHS settings. The University has set up both adult and paediatric clinics on site that are run in conjunction with NHS colleagues.

The adult clinic offers SLT to clients with a range of acquired communication disorders. Following a stroke or a diagnosis of a progressive neurological condition such as Parkinson’s or dementia, the ability to think, to use language and speak may become impaired. These difficulties can affect people’s identity, well-being, relationships and ability to participate in society. Students on placement within this clinic develop skills in assessing and diagnosing communication disorders and are able to deliver innovative and evidence-based therapy. The clinic has close links with the NHS who refer clients and with the local Stroke Association, where students deliver group conversation therapy. The University has collaborated with Speech and Language Therapists within Cardiff and Vale Health Board to offer additional clinics that provide group therapy to people living with long term neurological disorders. These clinics offer placements to students throughout the academic year.

Paediatric clinics have been running since 2022. These are NHS sessions run by NHS therapists working with an early years caseload. This offers the opportunity for students to have placements at the clinic during the year and encourages ongoing collaboration between the university lecturers and their NHS colleagues.
