Staff Overview

​Fiona received a PhD degree in Computing from Edinburgh Napier University in 2008. Her research over the past twenty years has focused on the fast-changing relations between humans and digital technologies. It is multi-disciplinary and shows a substantial contribution to scholarship in the field of Human Computer Interaction. In particular, her interests are in aesthetic and ethical computing, human factors of cyber security and educational technologies. Fiona is especially interested in the ethically aligned design of technology and how we might design for engaging, usable, safe, secure, green, inclusive and accessible experiences online.

Teaching

Fiona is Programme Director for BSc (Hons) Computing for Interaction and BSc (Hons) Computing with Creative Design in the School of Technologies.

Research

Fiona is a research leader in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) with a focus on aesthetic and ethical computing, human dimensions of cyber security, and educational technologies.

She is co-leader the Creative Computing Research Centre (CCRC) at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Other Projects and activities

Fiona is passionate about getting more girls into computing sectors and supporting women in IT.

Recent outreach work with Cardiff Metropolitan University:

  • 2021 to present: Working with three Cardiff Met female students to set up the first Welsh/UK student chapter with WICYS. The aim is to encourage more girls into Cyber.
  • 2021: Supporting (with project management) a group of secondary girls for a F1 SCHOOLS STEM CHALLENGE. They are through to the world platform.
  • 2020 to present: Working as an ambassador with the CYBERFIRST to engage more children into Cyber.
  • 2020 to present: Working with FIRST CAMPUS to develop a project to engage children into programming.
  • 2020 to present: Working with colleges in the Grŵp Llandrillo Menai on an ENGINEERING EDUCATION SCHEME WALES (EESW) Project on Green Computing.
