Biography

Aidan Taylor is Lecturer, Researcher and Technician Demonstrator (Programmable Technologies) at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He is a maker who works in the fields of electronics and programming. His background is in composition and experimental music but also in professional music technology having spent some time working as a Hardware Development Engineer at Modal Electronics. Today his practice is broader involving making with a wide range of emergent fabrication technologies and he specialises in the deployment of embedded systems for physical computing, electro-mechanical design and the 'Internet of Things'.

Aidan was recently involved as a Research Assistant on The LAUGH Project, an AHRC funded design project set up by Professor Cathy Treadaway. LAUGH took an individualised approach to designing for people living with advanced dementia, and involved a diverse range of prototyping including sensory textiles and e-textiles, embedded audio, fidget objects and interactive electronics.

Aidan is involved in the Cariad and Fab-Cre8 research groups at Cardiff Metropolitan University, a FabLab tutor and a member of a number of local technology communities including Maindee Maker Space, PyDiff and PyData.

Current research

  • The LAUGH Project (Compassionate Design for Advanced Dementia)
  • Fab-Cre8 Enchanting Technologies (Addressing the digital marginalisation of school pupils with profound disabilities)
  • Fab-Cre8 Internet of Things (Developing a tool kit for the deployment of embedded technology for the Internet of Things)
