How we allocate accommodation

We know that where you live is a big part of your university experience, and we want the process to feel clear, fair and supportive from the start.

We don’t allocate rooms on a first come, first served basis. Instead we review applications in structured allocation rounds so that everyone has a fair opportunity to be considered.

We look at a range of factors including your eligibility, preferences, course location and any support needs you may have.  Our aim is to offer you a suitable place to live that helps you settle in and feel part of a positive student community.

If your preferred option isn’t available, we’ll always try to offer you a suitable alternative. This may be in Cardiff Met halls or with one of our trusted accommodation partners.

Applying early (before the guarantee deadline) gives you the best chance of being included in the main allocation rounds and accessing the widest range of options.

If you’d like to understand the process in more detail, including how decisions are made and how offers are managed, you can read our full guidance document below:

Frequently Asked Questions

We do not allocate rooms on a first come, first served basis. Instead, we consider the following to make sure the process is fair for everyone:

  • Your eligibility
  • Any priority needs
  • When you completed your application
  • Your campus of study
  • Your preferences
  • What rooms are available

We will always try to match your preferences where we can, but we can’t guarantee a specific hall, room type or price. If your preferred option is full, we will offer you a suitable alternative.

If your preferred halls are fully booked, we may offer you an alternative in either Cardiff Met halls or with one of our trusted partner providers.

These are privately owned accommodation providers that the University works with to offer more accommodation options. You will see details about these providers and the options available in your accommodation application and on our website.

If you are offered a room with a partner:

  • You will receive an offer directly from them
  • Your contract will be with the provider, not the University

You should apply as early as possible, especially before the guarantee deadline. While we don’t operate on a first come, first served basis, applying early means:

  • You are included in the main allocation rounds
  • There is more availability to match your preferences

Once you have submitted your application:

  • We will review it as part of the allocation process
  • If you are eligible, you will receive an offer
  • You will be given a short period of time (up to three days) to accept and secure your room.

You can still apply, but:

  • Accommodation is not guaranteed
  • Options may be more limited

We will still do our best to help you find something suitable.

Yes, if you have:

  • A disability or medical need
  • Accessibility requirements
  • Other support needs

You can tell us in your application. We will take this into account when allocating accommodation.

Yes – your lifestyle and room-mate matching preferences help to group students where possible. We also take into account:

  • Welsh language preferences
  • Creating balanced and supportive communities

We prioritise (where possible):

  • Students under 18 at the start of the contract period
  • Care leavers or estranged students
  • Students with additional needs
  • Elite Athletes (Cyncoed campus)

Priority helps us find suitable accommodation but does not guarantee a specific room.
