Specialist Subject Areas

I specialise in relief, intaglio, lithographic and screen printing techniques, and also have a particular interest in paper engineering to create movable books, automata and paper machines. I also make artist’s books, box works, and multiples.

Qualifications

BA Hons Graphic Arts from Anglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge.
MFA from The Cardiff School of Art and Design.

Biography

Before joining Cardiff School of Art and Design I worked for many years at the renowned Curwen Studio near Cambridge. This involved working alongside such artists as Paula Rego, Patrick Heron, John Hoyland, Peter Blake and RB Kitaj to create and edition their original prints. During this time I also developed myself as a practising artist exhibiting throughout the UK and abroad.

Open Books, a touring exhibition of artist’s books as part of the Jaipur Literary Festival which will also travel to Canada and China in 2016/17
Xiaoxiang Exhibition of International Printmaking, China; including an international portfolio exchange.
Small, SPECTACULAR, The Paper Works of Thomas Martin. Calgary University, Canada. This also included lectures and workshops as part of their International Visiting Artist Programme.

Commissions:

The Victoria and Albert Museum commission for “Cherry on the Cake” a showcase of artists and designers response to the theme of paper. My piece took the form of boxes of small screen prints each one being unique.

Kettles Yard Gallery, Cambridge, commission to design a small box work of views of Kettles Yard House to cut and make.

The Crooked House Gallery, commission to design a model of the gallery to cut and make.

Awards

Birgit Skiold Memorial Trust, award granted to carry out two projects, one to design a popup book and the other to construct a large relief piece with lit and moving mechanisms.

FSG Design Award given during ‘Watch out for the small Print’ touring mini print show.

JPP Paper prize given during Originals 10 at the Mall Galleries, London

Publications:

I have written many articles and book reviews for Printmaking Today and have work in the A&C Black series of printmaking handbooks.

Activities:

I have demonstrated to many groups through regular workshops including instruction on various printmaking, bookbinding and paper making techniques.
