Profile

Carys is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist. She graduated from University of Wales Institute Cardiff (now Cardiff Met) in 2006. She joined the Cardiff Met lecturing team on a full time basis in 2020.

Prior to joining the team Carys worked as a highly specialist speech and language therapists in the NHS and has worked in Wales and England. She has considerable experience of working in acute hospitals and rehabilitation units, working with individuals following stroke or traumatic brain injury. Carys also has a background in quality improvement, managing improvement projects with the wider multi-disciplinary team to improve client experience and care. She is a member of the All Wales Stroke Expert Group.

Carys is a Welsh speaker and teaches in Welsh and is an active member of the University’s Welsh Language Advisory Group. She is currently in her final year to attain her Post Graduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education.

Carys is a registered member of the regulatory body, HCPC and professional body RCSLT.

Teaching

Carys contributes to the Welsh and English medium education streams on the course. She contributes to the teaching of bilingualism and the clinical application, language and use, complex communication disorders in adults, clinical skills and also supervises undergraduate projects.

She has a specialist interest in adult neurology and leads on the eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties module.

Research

Carys has an interest in research that contributes to the lived experience of service users accessing healthcare service in minority languages such as Welsh. She is also passionate about developing and improving access to resources for assessment and therapy for individuals with communication and eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties after stroke. She is looking forward to develop her research portfolio as a new member of the lecturing team.
