British Council: Opportunity to teach English in Hong Kong

Spend 10 months working as a full time English Language Assistant in the high-rise metropolis of Hong Kong. In Hong Kong you will have the chance to not only immerse yourself in Asian culture and cuisine but also be an ambassador for contemporary UK culture and language. 


The British Council have up to 30 posts available in Hong Kong however, applications will be competitive this year!


You can expect to work in a vocational institution with students aged 15 to 24 for up to 40 hours a week. However, the range of placements available change depending on which institutions can host a Language Assistant. You will earn around £1,800-2,000 GBP (approx. 20,000 HKD) per month.  


You can also expect to enjoy the following financial benefits if you choose to take part in the programme:  

  • A return flight to Hong Kong (paid for and arranged by British Council Hong Kong) 
  • A contribution of HKD 230 towards visa costs    
  • An offer of discounted accommodation provided by the Vocational Training Council (around HKD 4,500-5,000 / £580 GBP per month)

Eligibility requirements 


There are no general language requirements meaning the opportunity is open to all degree disciplines. However, you must have graduated from university with at least a bachelor's degree and have your degree certificate by September 2023. How to apply  


The deadline for applications is February 1 2023. As part of the application process, you will need to complete an application form which includes a motivation and supporting statement along with a question on applying cultural knowledge to the classroom. You will also be asked to provide the email address of someone who can act as a referee. If your application is successful, you will be invited to complete a video interview in the spring.
