Santander Cultural and Employability trip to Belgium 2019

In 2019 40 students from 5 Cardiff Met schools completed a one-week cultural and employability trip to UCLL, Leuven, Belgium.  At the end of the week each student was asked the same set of questions linked to their experience.

What did you most enjoy about the trip?

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and feel very grateful to be given such an amazing opportunity. I enjoyed visiting UCLL and taking part in the app building task. I really enjoyed exploring Leuven and Brussels and all the beautiful landmarks.

What did you enjoy the least?

I thought the majority of students took part and really made an effort.

A fabulous experience allowing me to gain a better understanding and more confidence when working with different people. Meeting new people and making new friends was very important and made the week easier. Exploring as a group was very humorous and I enjoyed this a great deal. Also, sitting down for the evening meals enabled me to get to know people a lot better.

The week has been an amazing experience that I am hugely grateful for. I have loved exploring Leuven and Brussels, with all the culture, the people, the food and the beer and chocolate. What I will take from this week is the boost of confidence in giving a presentation to my peers.

What did you enjoy most about the Leuven trip?

Everything! The city was beautiful, people were friendly and I enjoyed all of it. The beer and chocolate tour was enlightening and made it so much more interesting.

What did you enjoy the least?

I found it very difficult to find something wrong. The only thing that was stressful was the commute but that was out of our control.

I loved this trip. I explored the centre of Leuven and immersed myself in the culture. Everyone who went on this trip was also great and the experience felt very rich and rewarding. I would love to do this again and again. Thank you loads for this privilege.

What did you enjoy most about the Leuven trip?

I really enjoyed getting to know a great bunch of people that I would not normally have mixed with as we are all on different courses and different campuses. I also enjoyed experiencing the culture of Leuven with the beer and chocolate tour and even just walking through the town. It was also great to visit the university as we wouldn't normally have this opportunity, let alone in another country.  Finally, among many other points, I really enjoyed the designing an app process as it was completely new to me and not something I would typically do.

What did you enjoy the least?

I enjoyed the least the build up to the presentations as I have little self-confidence when speaking in public, presentations etc. I was extremely nervous and anxious and not looking forward to it. However, my group created an exciting app which helped me calm my nerves for the presentation. It helped me find a way to have more confidence in making presentations and it wasn't even that bad when we presented. Although I didn't want to do it before hand, I felt great after it and it was good to get out of my comfort zone.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity that was made possible by Santander and Rowena. I would encourage anyone I come across to apply for this opportunity next year! It was great to meet new people, experience different culture and gain more confidence, I had the best week. Thanks very much!!
