Staff Overview

Dean Way is a Lecturer in Hospitality Management and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Dean joined the Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management Department on a full-time basis in early 2018 having previously worked as an Associate Tutor in Cardiff School of Management. Dean moved into higher education after studying for a BA and MSc in Hospitality Management and a PGCE at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

After working for a large retail company in various management and regional positions, Dean entered the hospitality industry to pursue his passion in food and beverage. Having worked in a number of high-profile restaurants and hotels, Dean has worked on large events such as the NATO conference, Champions League, various sporting and music events and cooked for high profile dignitaries including the Queen and the Prince of Wales.

After working with students on a number of hospitality projects and local community events, Dean decided he had a passion for inspiring the next generation of hospitality staff and began working with Cardiff Metropolitan University on a part time basis.


As a lecturer who is part of the tourism, hospitality and event management department Dean teaches across all levels of the undergraduate programs across a range of modules. However, is specifically the module lead for Level Four Hospitality in Practice, Hospitality & Event Operations which are designed to immerse students into the world of the industry through a varied program of theory and practical experiences. Dean is also the head of the department’s final year Enterprise Project module.

This final project has launched a number of student’s small business ventures over the last several years and forms part of the supervisory team for student projects for the module.

In addition, Dean is also a first year tutor with pastoral responsibilities and academic oversight of the first year Hospitality students.

Dean also works closely with the First Campus Program whose aim is to increase higher education participation from groups and communities in Wales by raising aspirations and creating new study opportunities and learning pathways to higher education.

It engages with Community First Schools, Community First Officers, Youth Worker and Voluntary/Third sector groups engaging those people of all ages who are currently under-represented in higher education. Dean has been working with the program for over seven years to deliver its hospitality programs to pupils aged 12-16 and adult learners.

Dean holds a level four certificate in Food Safety awarded by the RSPH and works with the enterprise unit at the university in delivering Food Safety Level two and three qualifications to both the university and those in the trade on behalf of the RSPH. The RSPH (Royal Society of Public Health) is an independent, multi-disciplinary charity dedicated to the improvement of the public's health and wellbeing. The company helps inform policy and practice, working to educate, empower and support communities and individuals to live healthily and Cardiff Metropolitan University is one of its members.
