Staff Overview

​​​​​Dr. Babatunde Salami joined Cardiff Metropolitan University as a Senior Lecturer in Project Management. He teaches in the MSc Project Management programme, supervises students' research, and undertakes independent research work. His research interests include project management, project intelligence, digital construction, the circular economy, and the application of artificial intelligence to enhance processes and develop practical solutions to contemporary issues.

Prior to joining Cardiff Metropolitan University, Babatunde worked with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research groups at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and UWE Bristol. He actively participated in various funded projects, contributing significantly to the field. An experienced educator and industry expert, Babatunde has over 15 years of practical experience in project management and sustainable practices. He has worked extensively across multiple continents, including Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His career in the construction industry has spanned various roles, including Construction Project Manager, Civil/Structural Engineer, and Site Manager, highlighting his diverse expertise in the field. His approach to teaching integrates his experience from teaching, research, and industry to enhance students' learning, attainment, and satisfaction. He holds certifications such as the Project Management Professional (PMP) and LEED Accredited Professional with a Building Design and Construction specialization (LEED AP BD+C). He effectively bridges the gap between theory and practice, offering students a comprehensive understanding of project management and sustainable principles. His commitment to staying current with industry trends and research ensures that students receive up-to-date knowledge. His dedication to inspiring the next generation of professionals in this dynamic field is unwavering, both in the classroom and through ongoing research endeavours.

Babatunde holds a PhD in Construction Materials and Management, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering. During his PhD, he was awarded the "Sanggar Sajung" (Hall of Fame) for excellence in publishing for three consecutive years (2016, 2017, and 2018). Through his collaborative research, he has published approximately 60 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals and has been granted thirteen patents for innovative research outputs.

An active reviewer for several refereed journals, Dr. Salami contributes to publications such as the International Journal of Construction Management, Journal of Engineering, Design, and Technology, Experts Systems and Applications, Journal of Cleaner Production, Scientific Reports, Construction and Building Materials, Cleaner Technologies, and others.

Babatunde adopts the dual roles of an architect and gardener in his project management education approach. As an architect, he meticulously designs and structures the academic journey, providing a comprehensive and cohesive learning experience. As a gardener, he patiently and insightfully cultivates each student's knowledge and skills. This fusion of roles fosters not only career-ready professionals but also innovative and critical thinkers. His teaching methodology combines modern technology with traditional approaches, transforming the classroom into a dynamic, interactive learning environment. By placing a strong emphasis on research-informed content, Dr. Salami aligns his teachings with the latest industry trends and theoretical advancements, ensuring practical insights applicable in real-world scenarios.

​My research primarily focuses on the aspects of sustainable project management within the construction industry. My interest lies in advancing project efficiency and effectiveness through the integration of digital and smart technologies, including AI and Big Data Analytics. I am dedicated to exploring how these innovations can be leveraged to enhance project delivery, streamline processes, and promote sustainable practices, all while aligning with the principles of the circular economy and net-zero targets. My goal is to drive forward a more sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced construction sector.
