Postgraduate degrees at Cardiff School of Art & Design are designed to extend creative and philosophical enquiry, delivered through the development of research and practice-based research projects.

Our master’s programmes are shaped by staff and school research communities, imparting our students with the Cardiff Met EDGE - a skillset that emphasizes ethics, digital proficiency, global awareness, and entrepreneurship, making graduates forward-thinking, sustainable, and socially responsible. These degrees offer lifelong learning foundations and 21st-century employable skills.

There are three distinct modes of study.

  • Master’s with multidisciplinary modules as part of the Federal Scheme*: MA Ceramics & Maker, MA Creative Enterprise & Innovation, MA Fashion Design, MFA Fine Art, MDes Global Design, MA Illustration & Animation, MA Interior Design, MA Photography and MA Visual Communication Design.

  • MRes (Master of Research) in Art & Design: Ideal for doctoral preparation or advanced creative research.

  • MSc Product Design: Industry-focused, enhancing graduates' employability.

*The federal scheme at Cardiff School of Art & Design combines practice and inquiry throughout the year. Students propose research projects within bespoke modules and engage in multi-disciplinary activities. The program culminates in a symposium presentation and a Professional Output, which showcases research results through events, exhibitions, or publications.

The scheme's goal is to advance research and promote art and design research beyond academia, preparing students for PhD research or professional careers in the arts and design.

“Having a space at Cardiff School of Art & Design where I can come and create every day surrounded by other artists, and with the support of the staff and the guidance of the modules, has drastically changed my practice for the better.

Over the duration of the course, I have found my unique voice as an artist and am now able to position myself and my work within the wider contexts of other artists, movements, and the world at large.

The MFA acted as a fantastic incubator for me, I now feel more confident in myself and my practice. I’ve developed great self-motivation, and have a strong sense of direction about where I’m headed next.”

“My main reason for studying the Master’s degree in Product Design was to further prepare me for industry. While I believe that the undergraduate course offered more than enough preparation for a role as a designer, I knew there was more I could get from the postgraduate degree; a chance to get one step ahead of the competition and develop a more detailed approach to product design.

As each of the modules on the MSc course are led by a live brief, this provided me with key insights into industry. These projects were very exciting, as they were led by clients from all sorts of backgrounds – I was able to dive into projects about furniture design, advanced materials, cognitive connections, quantitative and qualitative research techniques, user centred design, sustainable practice and much more.”
