Staff Profile Overview

Dr Esyin Chew is the Reader (Professor without chair) in Robotics and Educational Technologies, a truly interdisciplinary researcher. She is the Head of the EUREKA Robotics Centre, one of the 11 specialist robotics centres in the UK for research facilities, and she has also led a few government, university and industrial funded projects from the EU, Australia, Malaysia and the UK. 

She is a creative academic investigating humanoid service robotics with machine learning capability for impact case studies that attracted national press and media. Esyin provides consultancy and training workshops such as service and social robots for healthcare, hospitality & tourism, and the education sector with data analytics and visualization capabilities, personal response systems and Turnitin-GradeMark-PeerMark. 

Before joining Cardiff Metropolitan University, she worked in the School of IT at Monash University Malaysia and the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, University of South Wales. She facilitated institutional blended learning implementation, staff development on Technology Enhanced Learning and best practices/policy development. Esyin is invited as a keynote speaker for international conferences, reviewer for various indexed journals and conference proceedings in the related field.

Prior to her academic career, Esyin was a software engineer at Acer Group Malaysia and e-Business Ltd, contributing to the development of the first Malaysia online banking system and web-based EIS system back in the 1990s.  ​

I am the project leader and founder of the below labs: 

1. EUREKA Robotics Centre (2018-present):
 i. IR Maker Lab: 3D design and printing for bio-inspired robots and robotics parts.

iii. STEAM Lab: (1) STEM workshops, CPD and internship for teachers and pupils across Wales, Malaysia and India; (2) Robotics lab design and setup consultancy.
