Role in the School

Finance and Resources Officer

I work in the Office of the Dean, supporting the School Resources and Finance Manager in the administration of finance and HR matters for the school.

I am the first point of call for staff with enquiries about processes and policies in these areas. I use Agresso and Trent systems, both of which have their quirks, so sharing Agresso tips with staff is also part of what I do.

Topics I get involved with include absence recording, casual staff pay, staff development, purchasing, budget recording, health & safety (including providing secretariat to the school committee) and HR compliance.

I make a large variety of purchases with the school credit card, for things we don’t have a supplier for. From amazing books to plastic fruit and many items with intriguing names that I don’t understand and more mundane things bought to be repurposed in impressively creative ways.

Having run away to Norwich to complete my degree in History of Art and Architecture, I returned to Cardiff as a poor graduate and accidently started a 17 year long career in the Transport arm of the UK Civil Service.

This took me all over the UK working in operational customer focused work at all levels. I’ve managed a large call centre and small specialist groups, and have been a part of delivering varied services to the public.

Besides becoming encyclopaedic on the organisation after all those years I have never had an interest in the Transport sector, never sitting a driving test. I therefore eagerly took voluntary redundancy a few years ago to come and work in a place like this where I could become more knowledgeable about topics that really interest me.
