The Centre for Health, Safety and Environment (CHSE) is a group of academics, researchers and professional consultancy staff dedicated to assessing and solving issues around occupational and environmental health – mainly those involving bioaerosols (airborne particles such as bacteria or fungi that can cause severe health problems).
Based in the School of Sport and Health Sciences, CHSE forms an essential part of the Centre for Health Immunology Microbiology and Environment (CHIME).
For decades, CHSE has been conducting research and providing consultancy services focused on assessing and managing health risks arising from occupational and environmental exposures to bioaerosols in the UK waste sector.
Professor Peter Sykes, Head of CHSE, is also a member of the Creating Healthier Workplace Group within the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum. He has been instrumental in developing guidance on bioaerosol exposure to help operators meet their statutory obligations.

Use CHSE’s expertise
Harnessing decades of industry experience and a range of state-of-the-art facilities on-site, CHSE helps organisations create safer, healthier workplaces for their staff, customers and the wider environment.
They’ve worked with organisations from a broad range of sectors to assess, monitor and mitigate the risk of bioaerosol emissions, ultimately improving the health of their staff, while reducing costs and enhancing productivity.
CHSE’s consultancy services include:
- environmental and general occupational monitoring
- occupational hygiene monitoring, which includes dust, gases and vapours
- general occupational hygiene consultancy
- audit training
- developing policies and procedures in managing bioaerosols

Specialist facilities
CHSE carries out its research and consultancy work in a controlled environment at the specialist, purpose-built lab facilities at Cardiff Met.
These facilities house advanced analytical and microbiological equipment and a bioaerosol chamber – the only one of its kind in Wales.
